The Space Society of Auraria (SSA) is a newly formed student club at the Auraria Campus in Downtown Denver. They encourage creative thought in the fields of astronomy, physics and engineering. They are host of astronomical viewing events and creative student gatherings. Officially, the SSA is registered as a club at the University of Colorado at Denver (UCD) but it is closely associated with the Metropolitan State College of Denver (MSCD), due to the combined physics departments of UCD and MSCD. You do not need to be a student at UCD or MSCD to be a student of the knowledge they encourage.

SSA Description as reported to UCD's Office of Student Life

The purpose of the Space Society of Auraria (SSA) is to be a forum for interested students of science to communicate.  We will work as a team of different institutions on one campus.  Our founding department is the combined physics departments of the University of Colorado at Denver (UCD) and Metropolitan State College of Denver (MSCD).
Our goals are to hold several member meetings per year.  At least once per semester we will hold astronomical viewing events for our members.  In addition to the astronomical viewing events, we plan to hold a minimum of two member meetings during fall semesters and one member meeting during spring semesters.  We also hope to be able to offer our members one astronomical camping trip each summer semester.
The Space Society of Auraria has been in the works for at least a year now.  The line of thinking began in the Fall of 2006 when Stephanie Pahl of MSCD along with others in her department put together a day-time viewing of the transit of Mercury across the Sun.  This created an interest in holding these types of events more regularly.  In the Spring of 2008 Stephanie Pahl, Anne Andrew, Tom Payetta, Russell Deitrick, Timothy Hatchett, and Aaron Ferona, as well as other, greatly appriciated, physics faculty and students, all helped to set up an astronomical viewing of a lunar eclipse.  With the founding officers assembled it was time to register as an official club.
Through our member meetings we hope to inspire interest in the physical sciences, give members a chance to present scientific topics to interested audiences, and to have fun with science.  Eventually we hope to gather a group of guest speakers who will have valuable information to share with our members.  We hope to have the funding to provide our members with snacks, prizes and possibly grants for scientific needs.  We hope to bring knowledge to those who are seeking it.
